i m confessin

for tad jones & gary giddins

so now they say pops
made himself a year older
& put his birth date back
from august 5, 1901

to the 4th of july,
1900,
nice round figures
for the musical father

of the 20th century,
but so what--bunk johnson
added 10 years
on to his lifetime

so as to place himself
in the buddy bolden band
of 1895
when the music began to cohere,

so bunk told all the white fellas
that he was there, & they took
his word for it, like his name
wasn t even bunk,

& monk,
as we have noted,
took off 3 years too
but who's counting,

he sounded even younger
in 1964
than he did in 1946, so
what does it matter

how old
we might get, so long
as we don t be so goddamned old
that we can't make it new
