"brake's sake"

for bernadette harris

the last time i saw you
it was 1982
& i wanted to re-
new our re-

lationship
from the point where i
stopped seeing you
5 years before--it was

because my brother
thought he wanted you
& i was already
married

& it seemed to make more sense
just to let you go--so
when i saw you in '82
you were more beautiful than ever

but i was in love with an-
other woman
& she took me back
the very next day--

well, i
left her again
to live with another
woman,& see, she

threw me out
in the coldness of winter, like
sonny boy said, it was 9
below

zero, i mean she was cold-
blooded,
girl, & i wanted
to see you again, but then

there it is, i saw you & you
couldn't see me when i
wanted you, & i called
somebody else and, well,

we fell in love
completely, like the
Lady sang, with her violets
pinned to her furs,

so you can forget me
if you care to, or smile
& shake your head
at everything i've said, but

sweet b, if we
aren't meant to be
lovers, then, for heaven's sake,
can't we always be friends?
