well you needn t

for skip Williamson

if there is something
to be learned
from the study of monk s
works (& there is)

there is no reason
to rhyme
nor to add beats
where they need not exist

except as the flow
or the rise & fall
of the composer's heartbeat,
or the pattern it makes

through the pulsation
in the brain, or the beat
of one's blood
through the veins & arteries,

back & forth through the body
or the brain
or the paths that are taken in life
& shape what one sees

or hears or feels
or fails to feel, these
& only these mark the lines
of the work

& give it what form
or course it may take, nothing
but what's there
to be used, no more

& no less, the materials
of song or verse,
directly from my heart
to yours, & that's that
