Part III

"Struttin' With Some Barbecue"

'King Oliver
was the one who taught me,'
Louis Armstrong says,
'he gave me the tuition

In my days
he was top man. Buddy Bolden
was the great man
when Joe was a kid. I heard

all the guys in New Orleans: Manuel Perez,
Freddy Keppard, Bunk Johnson,
but Joe Oliver was my man. Joe
was the most creative trumpet player

I ever heard. I called him Papa Joe
'cause he was like a father to me.
After I left Joe, I got the offer
to join Fletcher Henderson,

going to New York in those days
was a big thing. While I was in New York
I also made the records
with Bessie Smith, she had

a certain something
in her voice
no other blues singer
could get. Fletcher

only let me play
3rd cornet in his band. The whole time
I was in his band
he'd only give me I6 bars

to get-off with. As far as Fletcher was concerned
he wouldn't even listen to me sing
nothing. All the singing
that I did before I joined Fletcher Henderson

went down the drain. Fletcher
was so carried away
with that society shit
& his education. [Back in Chicago]

It was Joe Glaser at the Sunset Cafe
who first put my name up,
he had a big sign
saying "Louis Armstrong

World's Greatest Trumpeter".
I was making regular records,
the Hot Five & that,
we'd work the tunes out in the studio.'
