mysterioso

for rick steiger

not quite so mysterious
but oh so, mister, so
strange & manly, like monk

could make it sound,
going up & down the scale
with such deliber-

ation, like he had all
the time in the world
to delineate his meaning, in life too

he may have seemed
strange & mysterious
as he strolled the sidewalks

of west 63rd street, hat
& beard to limn his image,
shades with bamboo frames

were so very hip, yes, but oh so
functional, perhaps, to cover
the cast in his eye

a popular figure, monk,
they say, at home
in his skin & at one

with the people
around him, the kids
especially

around the neighborhood
would greet him
with some glee, a family

man & raconteur, monk
went home at night
to nellie, or stayed in

for years at a time
if he felt like it, or moved
over to jersey with the baroness

& barry harris, he kept
his own clock
exactly as he felt it, went

where he wanted to go & saw
what he wanted
to see, mister

ra or mister ree,
to you or to me,
whoever he wanted to be
