one note:

fly right a monk suite is a selection of 15 poems from thelonious: a book of monk, a serial work in verse begun in 1982 which purports to fashion a poem after each of the compositions & arrangements recorded by the great african-american pianist, composer & bandleader thelonious monk during his 25-year recording career as a leader (1947-1972).

at this writing, more than half of the projected 150 poems in the monk series have been composed, each of them numbered (with several minor exceptions) according to their place in the chrono-discography of monk's recorded work. again with some few exceptions, only the first appearance of each of monk's recorded works is noted in the poems & in my numbering system.

i have presented these works in performance since january 1983, almost always with musical accompaniment in duets with tenor saxophone, piano, guitar, or drums, or with ensembles ranging from tenor sax & drums to full jazz quartets, quintets, & larger bands. since 1986 i have insisted that the music which accompanies the poems must be the actual monk work after which each piece was written

. the texts in this monk suite were selected from the book of monk to be recorded with pianist/ composer ed moss during four sessions at wvxu-fm studios in cincinnati between may-august 1991. the verse is set against the inventive improvisations of ed moss upon the monk themes & treatments which gave rise to the texts, & i would like to offer here my eternal thanks to ed for taking the considerable time required to learn the monk pieces not already in his repertoire.

this collection has been assembled to accompany the release of the cd of fly right , which was conceived & produced by steve gebhardt and ron esposito. special thanks to harvey kubernik, who originally commissioned this recording, & who supervised the production of the jack kerouac collection issued by rhino records in 1990 which brought back to me the enormous impact of the kerouac recordings upon my own work in verse & its performance with musical accompaniment.
