pannonica

for columbus luckett jr.

the baroness pannonica
de koenigswater, a lady
of the jazz persuasion

would pick up monk
in her rolls royce
& cruise the great master

around town, stop &
get something hip to eat,
pick up bird or

diz or hampton
hawes, dig some jams
somewhere uptown,

nica's tempo
moved her nicely all
over manhattan

in her rolls
royce car, an elegant pad
in the stanhope hotel

where bird literally croaked
watching the dorsey bros. on tv,
march 12, 1955,

nica's dream
turned inside out
by the body on the floor

but monk still hung
with the baroness, no
doubt closer now

from the loss of bird
& the tightening
around their hearts

& as hampton hawes
tells the story, there was monk
& his wife nellie

& the baroness one night
standing next to the rolls,
a big grin on monk's face, &

"hey hamp," sez monk,
"now i got me a black woman
& a white woman!"

yeah, monk,
just like the keys
on a motherfucking piano
