The Re-Birth Brass Band, pride of New Orleans' historic Sixth Ward, was formed by brothers Philip and Keith Frazier some 14 years ago when its members were barely in their early teens.
After obscure releases on Arhoolie and Mardi Gras Records and four well-received CDs on Rounder, a period of uncertainty following the death of manager Allison Miner, and a raft of personnel changes, Re-Birth has come back big-time with a new label, an exuberant new outlook, and its first new record in three years.
With We Come to Party, from the funkadelic Paul Deo cartoon on the front cover all the way through the fast-paced program of raucous, hard-hitting street funk inside, the Re-Birth brothers mean to serve notice that they're ready to break out of the folk-jazz ghetto and bust into the urban music mainstream for real.
We Come to Party combines stirring new street anthems like "Roll With It," "Fire" and the title track with self-referential, Jeep-targeted contemporary R&B numbers ("Don't U Wish," "Why U With Me," "U Been Watchin' Me"), brass band adaptations of pop tunes ("Let's Get It On," "Liberian Girl") and a geeked-up medley of traditional spirituals ("Glory, Glory" > "Jesus On The Mainline") to make up a scintillating musical package that's sure to be a favorite with the band's fun-loving fans all over the planet and--if all goes well--will win the popular New Orleans ensemble a host of new followers as well.
